Gated and private on 100 acres of rolling northeast Mississippi timber and pastureland, this is the historic Rainey Estate — Tippah Lodge — built by millionaire adventurer Paul J. Rainey in 1901. A photograph exists, taken on this front porch, of Rainey and President Theodore Roosevelt. Roosevelt came here to hunt. Recently, his grandson made the pilgrimage to stand where his grandfather stood. The next owner will own that porch. Rainey was the first man in history to hunt lions on horseback with hounds. He drove an ambulance on the Western Front in WWI. He lassoed a polar bear solo in the Arctic. His wildlife films played in Hollywood. His name is on the gates of the Bronx Zoo and on a 26,000-acre Audubon wildlife sanctuary in Louisiana.
